How many porta potties does a construction site need?

A construction site with 20 or fewer workers needs 1 toilet under OSHA rule 29 CFR 1926.51. A site with more than 20 workers needs 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal for every 40 workers. Above 200 workers, the ratio becomes 1 seat and 1 urinal per 50 workers.

OSHA Table D-1 applied to standard porta potties
Workers on siteOSHA minimumStandard units to order
1 to 201 toilet1
21 to 401 seat + 1 urinal per 40 workers1 (a standard unit has both)
41 to 802 seats + 2 urinals2
81 to 1203 seats + 3 urinals3
121 to 2001 seat + 1 urinal per 404 to 5
Over 2001 seat + 1 urinal per 50Workers ÷ 50, rounded up

Worked example: a framing crew of 45 needs 2 seats and 2 urinals by law. Each standard porta potty has 1 seat and 1 urinal, so the site needs 2 units.

Our recommendation: the legal minimum assumes weekly cleaning keeps up. We suggest 1 unit for every 10 workers on a 40-hour week. That keeps the tank from filling before the next service visit. South Carolina runs its own OSHA plan, which adopted the federal construction rule. Read the official text of 29 CFR 1926.51 or our plain-English OSHA porta potty guide.

How does weekly job site service work?

Weekly job site service means one visit every 7 days, usually on the same weekday as delivery. The technician pumps the waste tank, scrubs the seat, walls and floor, and adds fresh blue deodorizer. Toilet paper and hand sanitizer are restocked on every weekly visit.

  1. PumpThe vacuum truck empties the waste tank. Waste goes only to state-approved disposal sites under SC Regulation 61-56.1.
  2. CleanSeat, urinal, walls, door handle and floor are scrubbed and rinsed.
  3. Charge and restockFresh deodorizer goes in the tank. Paper and sanitizer are refilled.
  4. CheckThe tech checks the door latch, vent and level, then logs the visit.

Need a different service day? Ask dispatch to move it to Mondays or Fridays. Crews over 10 workers in July and August often add a second weekly visit. Spartanburg's average July high is 90.1°F, and heat speeds up odor.

What does a job site porta potty cost per month?

A Spartanburg job site porta potty starts at $199 per 28-day cycle, with weekly service included. Delivery and the final pickup are separate lines on the quote and depend on where your site is. A 28-day cycle is billed in full, so a 3-day roofing job pays one cycle.

  • What raises the price: extra service visits, hand wash stations, ADA units, and job sites far outside Spartanburg County.
  • What does not: keeping the unit for the full 28 days. Asking for fewer visits does not lower the cycle price.
  • Renewals: the cycle renews automatically until you call for pickup. You get an invoice for each cycle.

See every line explained on the porta potty rental cost guide.

Where should a porta potty go on a construction site?

A construction porta potty should sit on level, firm ground within about 30 feet of where the service truck can park. The service hose reaches roughly that far. Keep the unit clear of crane swing paths, trench edges and dumpster drop zones. Face the door away from the road.

Spartanburg red clay and rain

Upstate soil is deep, red and clayey, and the county averages about 50 inches of rain a year. A unit set on bare clay can lean after a storm. A sheet of plywood or a gravel pad keeps it level and keeps the truck from rutting your site.

Streets and right-of-way

Keep units on the property, not in the street. Spartanburg County's temporary use permit keeps temporary structures out of the road right-of-way and 15 feet from hydrants, driveways and sidewalks. Work in a state road right-of-way needs an SCDOT encroachment permit. Check with the city for downtown sites.

Hand washing on job sites

OSHA 1926.51(f) requires washing facilities where crews apply paint, coatings, herbicides or other harmful materials. Many general contractors add a hand wash station on every site anyway. A station is refilled with fresh water at each weekly service.

Multi-site contractors

One account can cover units on several sites. Each site gets its own delivery line and service route, and you get one invoice per cycle.

Spartanburg construction porta potty rental questions

Is there a weekly rate for a short job?

Job site units rent by the 28-day cycle, and the cycle is not prorated. A 3-day roof tear-off or a 1-week crane lift pays one cycle. For a single weekend, an event rental may cost less, but it comes without weekly service.

Do I need to sign a long contract for a 10-month job?

A long job does not need a long contract. The rental renews every 28 days until you call for pickup. You can leave the end date open and stop billing with one call.

Can you deliver to a lot with no street address yet?

New lots without an address are common. Send a map pin, the subdivision name and the lot number, or the nearest cross streets. Mark the spot with a stake or cone and the driver will find it.

Can I get service twice a week?

A second weekly visit can be added to any job site rental. Large crews, long shifts and summer heat are the usual reasons. The extra visits show as their own line on the cycle invoice.

Will service every other week lower my price?

Every-other-week service can be noted on the order, but the 28-day price stays the same. The cycle price covers the truck being on your route each week.

Can I put a unit and a hand wash station at each of my sites?

Each site can have its own unit and its own hand wash station. Each site is priced with its own delivery line. Everything shows on one invoice per cycle.

How do I end the rental when the job is done?

Call or text dispatch with the site address. We schedule pickup, usually within 1 to 2 business days, and billing stops on the pickup date. Pickup is never automatic, so the unit stays until you call.
