How many porta potties do I need for a party or wedding?
A 4-hour Spartanburg party needs 1 standard porta potty for every 50 guests. Events lasting 5 to 8 hours need 1 unit for every 40 guests. When alcohol is served, add 1 unit for every 4 units in the base count. A 150-guest, 5-hour wedding with a bar needs 5 units.
| Guests | Up to 4 hours | 5 to 8 hours | 5 to 8 hours with alcohol |
|---|---|---|---|
| 25 | 1 | 1 | 2 |
| 50 | 1 | 2 | 3 |
| 100 | 2 | 3 | 4 |
| 150 | 3 | 4 | 5 |
| 200 | 4 | 5 | 7 |
| 300 | 6 | 8 | 10 |
This is our planning method, built from what we see at Upstate events. It is not a legal rule. South Carolina sets no statewide toilet-per-guest count, so check your venue or permit office. Try the porta potty calculator for your exact numbers.

Which porta potty is right for a wedding, shower or backyard party?
A backyard cookout or birthday party usually needs only standard porta potties. A wedding or catered shower is better served by deluxe flushing units or a restroom trailer, because guests can wash their hands inside. Any event open to the public should include at least 1 wheelchair-accessible unit.
| Event | Usual setup | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Birthday, graduation or cookout (under 50 guests) | 1 standard unit | Keeps traffic out of the house and off the septic tank |
| Family reunion or holiday weekend | 2 standard + 1 hand wash station | Long hours and food on the table |
| Church picnic or festival | Standard units + 1 ADA unit per cluster | Public guests of all ages and abilities |
| Wedding or rehearsal dinner | Deluxe flushing units or a 2-stall trailer | Inside sinks, mirrors and lighting for dressed-up guests |
| Baby or bridal shower | 1 deluxe flushing unit | Hand washing inside, more room |
For events where the public attends, the 2010 ADA Standards (section 213.2) say at least 5 percent of portable units in each cluster, and no fewer than 1, should be accessible. Read the ADA Standards section 213 or see our wheelchair-accessible unit.
Why do weekend event units arrive Friday and leave Monday?
Weekend event porta potties arrive Friday and leave Monday because service routes run on weekdays. The extra days cost nothing more than one event day. Friday delivery also means the unit is set and stocked before your first guest arrives, whatever time the party starts.
A Friday-to-Monday rental also covers a rain date. If Saturday's storm moves your party to Sunday, the unit is still there.
Need it gone sooner? A Saturday pickup can be requested for public parks and church lots. Dispatch confirms it when routes allow.
Do I need a permit for a porta potty at my Spartanburg event?
A private party on your own property does not need a permit for a porta potty. Events on public property in the City of Spartanburg need a special event permit. The city's 2026 fees are $25, $50 or $100, filed 30, 60 or 90 days ahead depending on event size.
Single-day events over 200 people, or events with a road closure, fall in the $50 tier. Multi-day events fall in the $100 tier. See the City of Spartanburg special event permits page. Outside city limits, festivals and outdoor concerts need a Spartanburg County temporary use permit.
Where should porta potties go at an outdoor event?
Event porta potties work best 50 to 100 feet from food tables, on level ground, with the doors facing the crowd. Guests should see them without them being the backdrop of your photos. The service truck needs to reach the spot within about 30 feet for delivery and pickup.
- Light the path. Evening events need a string light or lantern near the doors.
- Put hand washing next to the toilets. A hand wash station right beside the units gets used. One across the yard gets skipped.
- Food vendors bring their own sinks. South Carolina's temporary food service rules require a vendor handwashing sink with hot and cold water. Guest stations do not replace that sink.
- Mind the slope. Clay lawns stay soft after rain. Pick the flattest, firmest part of the yard.
Spartanburg event porta potty rental questions
Can you drop it off the morning of the party and pick it up that night?
Same-day drop-off and pickup is not offered, because trucks cannot be held on standby for one evening. The unit arrives the day before and leaves the next business day. That schedule costs the same as one day.
Are event units the same ones used on construction sites?
Event units are a separate group in our fleet and go only to events. They are newer, cleaner-looking units, stocked with paper and hand sanitizer. Job site units stay on job sites.
Do you have pink units or his-and-hers units?
Pink units are in our event fleet and are popular for showers and ladies' sides at weddings. Ask for a his-and-hers pair when you book, and we deliver one pink and one blue unit.
Is one porta potty enough for 20 guests?
One standard unit is plenty for 15 to 20 guests at a 4- to 6-hour party. Add a hand wash station if food is served buffet-style.
Do you work with churches, schools and nonprofits?
Churches, schools and nonprofits rent from us every month for picnics, revivals, field days and fundraisers. Tax-exempt groups can email their exemption certificate, and we take the sales tax off the invoice.
How far ahead should I book for graduation season or the Fourth of July?
Book 2 to 3 weeks ahead for May graduation weekends, Memorial Day and the Fourth of July. These are our busiest dates, and event units book out first. Most other weekends can be booked a few days ahead.
Can I move the event address after booking?
A delivery address can be changed up to 2 business days before delivery at no charge. A surprise party can be booked under the host's name with the real address added later.
